Relocating to St. Louis: A Transplant’s Guide to Loving Life in the Lou

Moving to a new city can feel overwhelming, but St. Louis makes it easy to fall in love with its charm, history, and vibrant communities. As a transplant myself, I know how big of a decision it is to relocate, and I’ve been in your shoes—navigating new neighborhoods, figuring out where to eat, and trying to make connections.

If you’re planning a move to St. Louis, welcome! This city has so much to offer, and I’m here to help you settle in with tips, insights, and a whole lot of local love.

Are You a St. Louis Native or Transplant?

Let’s address one of the most unique St. Louis quirks right away: the question, “Where did you go to high school?” It might sound odd at first, but this conversation starter is practically a rite of passage here. For St. Louisans, it’s a way to connect, share a laugh, or figure out if they know someone you know (and trust me, they probably do).

When I first moved here, I didn’t have an answer for that question either, but it never stopped people from being welcoming. It’s all part of the charm of this close-knit community!

What I’ve Learned as a Transplant

Here’s the thing about St. Louis: it’s not just one city. It’s a collection of neighborhoods, each with its own personality, charm, and vibe. You’ll hear people talk about “The Hill,” “Soulard,” or “Tower Grove,” and you’ll quickly realize that each area offers something special.

Some highlights I’ve discovered:

  • You can find your perfect fit: Whether you want walkability, suburbia, or historic charm, St. Louis has a neighborhood for you.

  • The food is no joke: More on this below, but St. Louis loves its food, and so will you.

  • People are kind: From casual chats at the farmers’ market to long talks with neighbors, this city has a way of making you feel at home.

Tips for Relocating to St. Louis

1. Find the Right Neighborhood for You

Each part of St. Louis has its own flavor, and finding the right one can make all the difference. Some of my favorites include:

  • Central West End: Perfect if you love historic architecture, trendy restaurants, and a walkable lifestyle.

  • Soulard: Known for its French-inspired vibe, amazing Mardi Gras celebrations, and the iconic Soulard Farmers Market.

  • Clayton: A great pick for families or anyone looking for a suburban feel with excellent schools and amenities.

  • Tower Grove: If you’re into community vibes, local coffee shops, and one of the best parks in the city, you’ll love it here.

  • Kirkwood: A true gem for its small-town charm, vibrant Main Street, and welcoming atmosphere.

  • University City: A dynamic area with a mix of history, culture, and energy. The Delmar Loop is a must-visit for its eclectic shops, restaurants, and live music scene.

  • Ladue: If you’re looking for upscale living with beautiful homes, excellent schools, and a quiet suburban vibe, Ladue is a fantastic option.

  • Chesterfield: A perfect choice for those who want modern amenities, great shopping, and a more spacious suburban feel.

  • Webster Groves: Known for its tree-lined streets, historic homes, and charming downtown area. It’s a community with a small-town feel and a vibrant arts and culture scene.

Not sure which area is right for you? That’s where I come in—I can help you explore and find the perfect fit!

2. Don’t Skip the Food Scene

St. Louis takes its food seriously, and exploring the local cuisine is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the city’s culture. Whether you’re dining at a classic neighborhood spot or trying something more upscale, the food here won’t disappoint.

Here are a few must-tries:

  • Toasted Ravioli: This crispy, cheesy classic was invented right here in St. Louis. You can find great versions at Mama’s on The Hill or Charlie Gitto’s.

  • St. Louis-Style Pizza: Love it or hate it, this thin-crust pizza topped with gooey Provel cheese is a St. Louis staple. Try it at the iconic Imo’s Pizza.

  • Gooey Butter Cake: A sweet and sticky dessert that’s perfect with a cup of coffee. You can find amazing options at Park Avenue Coffee or Russell’s on Macklind.

  • Frozen Custard: Ted Drewes is a St. Louis institution. Whether you’re grabbing a classic concrete or trying a seasonal flavor, you won’t be disappointed.

  • BBQ: St. Louis is a barbecue town, and you’ll find some of the best ribs, brisket, and pulled pork here. Favorites include Pappy’s Smokehouse, Sugarfire Smokehouse, and the ever-popular Salt + Smoke, known for its tender meats and great sides.

  • Donuts: For a sweet morning treat, head to John’s Donuts in Soulard. Their fresh, classic donuts are the perfect way to start your day.

  • Breakfast: If you’re a brunch lover, Half & Half in Clayton is a must. Their pancakes and fresh takes on breakfast classics are worth the wait.

  • Burgers: For a family-friendly atmosphere and an amazing burger, you’ve got to try 5 Star Burgers. The welcoming vibe and delicious menu make it a go-to spot for both kids and adults.

3. Embrace the Local Quirks

St. Louis has its quirks, and you’ll learn to love them:

  • The high school question.

  • The endless pride for local sports teams (Go Cards! Go Blues!).

  • The unique weather that lets you experience all four seasons... sometimes in one day.

Leaning into these quirks will make you feel more connected to the city.

4. Get Involved and Make Connections

Making friends in a new city can feel daunting, but St. Louis has so many ways to get involved:

  • Join local events: From free concerts in Forest Park to neighborhood festivals, there’s always something happening.

  • Volunteer: Giving back is a great way to meet people and feel connected.

  • Explore community groups: Whether it’s a book club, trivia night, or sports league, there’s a group for you.
